Obituary for Carrie Fletcher Hitt from the Hattiesburg American, 6 Dec 1977 Mrs. H.I. Ellzey Rites Wednesday at Columbia for last wagon train survivor Columbia--Services for the last surviving person on the wagon train from Marcun, Texas, [probably means San Marcos, TX] in 1900 will be held Wednesday at Colonial Funderal [Funeral] home chapel. Mrs. H.I. Ellzey, 85, of New Orleans, formerly of Columbia, died at 6 p.m. Monday at the Hotel Dieu, New Orleans. Burial will be in in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Ellzey was seven years old and the youngest in the caravan, made up of several families equipped with five covered wagons and 32 horses. It arrived in what in now known as the Bunker Hill Community at Christmas time. H.I. Ellzey Jr., one of two sons of Mrs. Ellzey, now living on Broadmoor St., Columbia, said his mother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Hitt, had only 50 cents upon their arrival in Bunker Hill but that the little band of travelers sold some of their horses and divided the money. Mrs. Ellzey retired at age 60 after spending most of her life teaching in various Marion County schools. She was a member of Goss Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, H.I. of Columbia and Jack Ellzey of New Orleans; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Fortenberry and Mrs. Bob Ulmer, both of New Orleans; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. |
